Playful Learning Lab Staff

DR. annmarie thomas

The founder and director of the Playful Learning Lab at the University of St. Thomas, Dr. AnnMarie Thomas is passionate about creating engaging learning environments for learners and educators.

The director of the University of St. Thomas Center for Engineering Education and a research affiliate in the Playful Learning Lab where she directs our educational research efforts.

Dr. Jeff Jalkio

A member of the physics and engineering faculty at the University of St. Thomas, Jeff serves as a technical advisor for the Playful Learning Lab.

Raghad Algogandi 

(Public Health, ‘21) is working on the PLAYground team by making creative, hands-on learning exercise educational videos for K-12 Deaf students, and working on the Arabic translations.

Maria Baklund

(Mechanical Engineer, Peace Engineering Minor, '21) is involved with the OK Go Sandbox team, was the Project Lead for the international Art in Space project, and is working in collaboration with the Minnesota Children’s Museum, as well as helping with general laboratory organizational projects.

Affiliated Educators and Researchers

Karin Brown

Karin is an Instructional Designer for the University of St. Thomas and a passionate education enthusiast. She uses her experience in Math Education and Educational Technology to partner with the Playful Learning Lab on various projects, including STEPS camp and OK Go Sandbox. In her work with the Lab, she conducts research to determine the best ways that educators can increase students’ interest in and access to exciting STEM content and activities.  

Alison Haugh

Alison is a fifth grade educator at Glacier Hills Elementary School of Arts and Sciences in Eagan, Minnesota. She completed degree programs in STEM education with an emphasis in engineering, and in Elementary Education at the University of St. Thomas. Currently, Alison is pursuing a Ph.D. in STEM Education at the University of Minnesota and continues to provide insight to undergraduate research students in the Playful Learning Lab.

Jill Jensen

With 20+ years in science education, Jensen is now a K-5 Science Specialist at Glacier Hills Elementary School of Arts & Science, where she works to inspire students, staff and community members to find the joy in science, engineering, art, nature, and technology.

 

Allison Knoph

Allison has been teaching in elementary classrooms for seventeen years. She is passionate about helping transform the experience of education and loves connecting students to inspiring projects and people.

Nicole Koen

Nicole has been an educator for over twenty years and has found her role as the Makerspace Coordinator at Mounds Park Academy, a PreK-12 school in St. Paul, to be rewarding and instrumental in giving youth the power to make and facilitate change in our world. She uses Design Thinking and other engineering processes to fuel strategies while addressing real problems.

Jenna Laleman

(Elementary Education and STEM, Psychology Minor '18) is working on projects (including our STEPS program) focusing on developing lessons that encourage hands-on, fun ways for students to engage in engineering activities.

Caroline Little

A graduate of NASA's inaugural Microgravity University for Educators, Caroline teaches middle-school science and engineering. She spent the first part of her educator journey teaching French and moderating an engineering co-curricular, the Experimental Vehicle Team. She strives to inspire students to SEE themselves as Scientists, Engineers, and Explorers of the world around them.

Cindy Nordstrom

A 5th grade teacher and school board member, Cindy loves integrating Design Thinking into curricula, offering students the tools to solve real-life problems in a collaborative way.
